| Zoysia grass originated from
areas in Southeast Asia, China and Japan. It is a low growing, creeping grass, heat
resistant, wiry, possibly uncomfortable under foot. Zoysia is slow to establish but
aggressive and competes with weeds for its own space. Zoysia is a warm season grass that
can be grown further north than many of the other warm season grasses.
It makes one of
the most beautiful, carpeted lawns when fully established. -

Zoysia will go brown (dormant) with frost or
freeze and will remain that way until above 70+ temps return in late
spring (Around May). That makes it brown (dormant) about 6
months.

Why the Love or Hate
of having a Zoysia Lawn? -
Zoysia Lovers: Zoysia
makes a great summer season growing, green, weed free & drought
tolerant grass. It has a pleasant golden brown (dormant) color
in winter months. It's spreading ability makes it replace
weeds and other grasses, and over time cover your lawn solid.
It's slow growing speed results in less mowing (10-14 days mowing
frequency). Since it is a perennial grass, once planted
you will generally never have to seed or plant again! These
characteristics are what customers like about it.
On the Hate side: There are two
factors that are disliked. One is its spreading / invasive
nature. It tends to spread into flower beds AND into adjoining
neighbors lawns. This is difficult to control or stop, thus
some people hate it because of this nature. The other reason
is simply that some don't like the brown winter color. --
Bottom line is most love it... but if these two factors above are
concern for you then you might want to consider other grasses.
| SEED USE
NOTICE: Please note that we ONLY
recommend Zoysia seeds for use in bare soil areas.
Planting seeds into existing grasses has a HIGH
FAILURE rate. If planting into an existing lawn (grass
and/or weeds) we recommend that you consider using Zoysia
plugs instead of
seeds. - Zoysia seeds also are difficult to achieve
germination in low light / shady areas. Use plugs in
these areas for best results. |

With the first really cold
weather it will go dormant turning golden brown.
Generally it is not recommended that Zoysia be overseeded with
ryegrass. Zoysia is one of the
first warm season grasses to recover in the spring. For many years Zoysiagrass could
only be grown by vegetative propagation but the newer varieties can now be planted from seed.
Zoysia can be grown as far north as New Jersey along coastal
areas, New York and Maryland and as Far
West as California. Zoysia can be found growing in many soils from acidic to
alkaline.

ZENITH ZOYSIA SEED

Zoysia establishes a dense
thick turf that crowds out weeds after several mowings.
|
Zoysia grass is
wear
tolerant and can be used on golf courses, athletic fields (baseball and softball), lawns
and parks. It forms a dense sod but is slow to repair so it is
normally not used on high traffic football or soccer fields In the south Zoysia has
good shade tolerance while in the cooler areas it
needs more sun. Zoysia is a highly desirable grass for the coastal areas with an increased
tolerance for salt spray similar to St. Augustine.
|
A weed and grass free seed bed
should be established in the beginning. Later, after Zoysia has established the
aggressive dense growth will crowd out weeds and other grasses. Varieties
have different textures ranging
from coarse to fine. Newer varieties can now be planted from seed, which in the past
were only propagated through sod, sprigs and plugs. The slow growing aspect makes
Zoysia a
lower maintenance lawn. Zoysias fall under three species categories with varieties
developed from each. Lawns planted with sprigs or plugs may take up to two years to
fully develop into the thick density that a Zoysia lawn is capable of producing. Zoysia
seeded lawns will be quicker to establish than sprigs or plugs and
under ideal conditions can be established in five months.
The species brought from Manila is commonly called Manila
Zoysiagrass. The japonica species originated in China. Tenuifolia was introduced from the
Far East. Zoysias forms a dense sod and depending upon the variety produces a fine
to medium textured blades and the grass is fairly resistant to weeds, disease, drought and
insects.

Zenith Zoysiagrass Zenith is used on soccer,
baseball and softball fields as well as on golf courses in mild
to hot climates around the world. Zenith offers the unique
advantage of being the first improved zoysia hybrid - available
as seed. Seeding Zenith is less costly and faster than many
turfing options.
SEEDED BERMUDAS:
Zenith and
Compadre
are the newest
of the improved seeded varieties available.
|
Spreading by stolons and rhizomes, the growth pattern of the leaves makes it
suited for higher traffic locations but sometimes uncomfortable for
bare feet .
Zoysia withstands heavy usage after full establishment. High density sodding makes Zoysia
well suited for use on baseball fields, golf course fairways, and
lawns during summer growth months. Zoysia
grass can form thatch but doesn't attract as much disease and insect damage as
some of the other warm season grasses. Removal of cuttings with each mowing should
reduce thatch problems. Zoysia has good drought resistance once established and the
salt tolerance to grow exceedingly well along warmer coastal communities.
