Zoysia grass has been used in landscapes and golf courses in the US for more than 50 years.
Zoysia japonica grass varieties survive over winter as far north as Canada. Zoysia grass generally has shorter green periods the further north they are grown, but winter kill is rarely a problem.
Rather than die from the cold temperatures, Zoysia grass will go dormant, turning a golden brown, until temperatures rise again when it will green up.

Zoysia NOT Recommended |
All Zoysia Grasses will go brown (dormant) with frost or freeze and will remain that way until temperatures above 70° return in late spring (Around May depending on location).
Advantages of Zoysia Over Other Grass
Unlike cool season fairways of bluegrass, ryegrass and/or bentgrass, zoysia grass areas are planted once.
The creeping nature of Zoysia grass allows the turf plant to recover from wear and traffic without reseeding. This will add up to a substantial savings from reseeding cool season grasses every fall.
Percentage of Winter Kill Chart For Zoysia Grass Varieties

Advantages of Zenith Zoysia Grass
- Least expensive way to have superior zoysia turf
- Permanent turf that needs no reseeding
- Winter Hardy
- Poa annua control (a common turf weed)
- Requires less fertilizer
- Less water needed in summer - less mud, GREAT water conservation
- Less frequent mowing - GREAT for Co2 emissions
- Golfers love the way the ball sits up on zoysia grass
- Makes a great looking lawn grass
SEED USE NOTICE:
Please note that we ONLY
recommend Zoysia seeds for use in bare soil areas. Planting seeds into existing grasses has a HIGH
FAILURE rate. If planting into an existing lawn (grass and/or weeds) we recommend that you consider
using Zoysia Grass plugs instead of seeds. - Zoysia seeds also are
difficult to achieve germination in low light / shady areas. Use plugs in these areas for best results.
