COMPARISON OF ZOYSIA GRASSES
(Zoysia japonica, cv.
'Compadre')
PLANTING SITES
- Compadre Zoysia can be seeded on any turf grass project that
is specified for zoysia grass use. This variety is an excellent
choice to replace common zoysia, or any of the the other seeded
zoysia brands or varieties, as well as a good substitution for
some of the vegetative varieties. Golf course tees, fairways &
roughs, sports fields, schools, parks and home lawns can all use
zoysia for high quality turf.
LEAF WIDTH &
TEXTURE - The leaf width or texture on mature,
established Compadre Zoysia grass is approximately half that of
Traveler brand Zoysia or Common Zoysia grass, which is considered a
coarse textured grass. Compadre Zoysia will have a leaf width
and turf texture more similar to that of Meyer vegetative Zoysia,
a medium to medium-fine textured turf grass variety. (Higher
seeding rates and lower mowing heights, with more frequent mowing
can reduce this leaf width even further.)
-
Compadre (seed) - 1/8 - 1/4 inch (3 - 7 mm)
-
Meyer (vegetative) - 1/8 - 1/4 inch (3 - 7 mm)
-
Common (seed) - 1/4 - 3/8 inch (7 - 9 mm)
Mowing Recommendations For Zoysia Grass
Established Compadre Zoysia is generally mowed weekly between 1/2
inch and 2 1/2 inches height depending on turf use. With more
frequent mowing, the finer textured seeded zoysia grasses have been
successfully maintained at lower mowing heights - as low as 3/8
inch (9 mm) More frequent mowing will also increase the turf
density of any of the zoysia grass cultivars.
-
Compadre - 3/8 - 2 inch height ( 9 - 50 mm)
-
Meyer - 3/8 - 2 inch height ( 9 - 50 mm)
-
Common - 1 - 3 inch height (25 - 75 mm)

Zoysia Seed Characteristics & How To Plant
SEEDING RATE -
One to two pounds of high quality zoysia grass
seed per 1,000 square feet is the recommended planting rate for
most turf applications. With higher seeding rates,
and a regular maintenance program, the Compadre Zoysia will have a medium-fine
texture and a higher turf density.
SEED PLANTING
RECOMMENDATIONS - Broadcast the seed at or very
near the soil surface and incorporate very lightly with raking, a
light mulch covering or a roller - the use of a Brillion seeder or
including the seed in the tank of a hydroseeder are often the most
successful seeding methods. Zoysia seed needs light to
germinate, so the seed should be at or very near the surface of
the soil for the best germination results. A planting depth of
1/4 inch (5 mm) or shallower gives the best germination results -
a deeper planting depth will prolong the germination and
establishment time. With the seed so close to the surface, it
should be watered quite frequently with light water applications
until germination is complete - this will keep the seedlings from
drying out as they sprout. A soil temperature of 70 - 80°F
(18-25°C) at a 2 inch depth will give the most immediate
germination results. If faster germination is needed, spread
the seed out and expose it to light for 48 hours prior to
planting, or pre-soak the seed for 48 hours in warm water, then
dry back down and plant. Both of these techniques can cut the
time needed for germination by half.
ZOYSIA SEED
FORMS - Zenith and Compadre zoysia seed are available as raw,
natural seed. Compadre used to come as a coated seed but does not anymore.

Comparison Of Zoysia Grass Spread Rates
RHIZOMES &
STOLONS / RATE OF SPREAD - all Zoysia varieties spread by
surface stolons and underground rhizomes. The presence of
rhizomes also increases the hardiness of the variety, for winter
survival or drought tolerance. Some vegetative varieties have
few rhizomes, mostly spreading by surface stolons or runners.

Comparison of Zoysia Grass Colors & Density
TURF GRASS
QUALITY / COLOR & DENSITY - Zoysia species and cultivars vary
widely in their density, texture, color and other turf grass
quality characteristics. Compadre Zoysia is noted for its
darker green color and improved density.
