SEEDING OR PLUGGING
ZOYSIA LAWNS?
Which should I do (plugs / seed) is often a question asked about
Zoysia. Many are surprised to learn that seeds are even
available. While it is relatively new, seeds have been
available for years and the newer improved varieties have been on
the market for about 5 years. In that time thousands of lawns
have been successfully established from seeds.
So when should you use seed vs plugs?
USE SEEDS
- BARE SOIL AREAS ONLY:
If you want a faster, usually easier and economical method of establishment of a
Japonica variety of Zoysia. Seeded lawns can be fully
established in two years --- Seeds
should only be used in areas where you will have bare soil and can
prepare a proper seedbed. You will also need the capability of
watering the seeded areas for the first 3-4 weeks multiple times.
| SEED USE
NOTICE: Please note that we ONLY
recommend Zoysia seeds for use in bare soil areas.
Planting seeds into existing grasses has a HIGH
FAILURE rate. If planting into an existing lawn (grass
and/or weeds) we recommend that you consider using Zoysia
plugs instead of
seeds. - Zoysia seeds also are difficult to achieve
germination in low light / shady areas. Use plugs in
these areas for best results. |
USE PLUGS
- EXISTING LAWNS or bare soils:
If you do NOT wish to remove your existing lawn, or are NOT starting
a new lawn from bare soil conditions.
Zoysia Lawn Plugs do take longer
(2-4 years on average) to establish fully. They can also be
planted in existing lawns allowing for the eventual establishment
over a period of years. Plugs are also recommended for use in
areas of higher shade conditions. Seeds can be more difficult
to achieve good germination in shade areas as the Zoysia seeds are
VERY light sensitive and need a certain amount of sun light in order
to germinate. Plugs planted into existing grasses can take
much longer to cover... even as long as a decade (10 years) in some
cases.

Some plugged lawns can take up to 3-4 years (and more) to fully establish.
Seeded
lawns can be established in one
growing season if properly planted.
