MAINTAINING ZOYSIA LAWNS
Follow these simple instructions to
establish your lifetime lawn.
- Water your new lawn to keep it moist for a period of 2
weeks or until sod is rooted. (Do not waste water by over
watering!)
- Mow as soon as your new lawn is rooted - at the
recommended height (see table below) - Or mow in 3-5 weeks
when height is 2-3 inches (weeds and/or grass).
- Fertilize your lawn once rooted.
Once your lawn is established and well rooted
follow the
directions below to insure the best
possible lawn of
a lifetime!

| Mow at 1
1/2 inch height. Mow no more than 1/3 of the leaf off at one
mowing. Use sharp mower blades. Water
to supplement rainfall shortages only. Avoid fixed timer
irrigation settings. Zoysia best performs when it receives
approximately 1 inch of water per week. If one or more inches
of rainfall occur in a week, additional irrigation is not
necessary. (Example: if 1/2 inch of rain occurs within a
growing week, apply 1/2 inch by irrigation.) Do not waste
water by over watering. |
Fertility
Apply between 2 and 4 pounds of nitrogen per 1000 S.F.
annually, during the growing season. Select a fertilizer that is
labeled for use on zoysiagrass lawns. Do not apply fertilizer to
wet turf to avoid burning. Too much fertility will result in a
thatchy and unhealthy lawn.
Mowing
Mow between 1/2 and 1 and 1/2 inches high. Catch and remove
clippings. Never remove more than 1/3 of the leaf at any one
cutting. Always use a sharp blade. Can be mower with either reel
or rotary mower.
Watering
Though very drought tolerant, zoysiagrass prefers infrequent
deep watering. Do not over-water (avoid standing water for any
period of time).
Thatch Removal
Periodically (every other year) it may be necessary to remove
accumulated thatch and debris. This is best accomplished in the
late winter - just before turf turns green. Scalp or de-thatch
with a commercial machine and remove debris.
Weeds
Zoysias dense growth can reduce the weed population but to be
sure, use of a pre-emergent herbicide in the spring and fall,
recommended for use on zoysia lawns on the label is strongly
recommended.
Pests
Pests can become a problem, especially if zoysia is not growing
in a healthy way - too much fertility, too little food and water,
etc. If pests persist, contact the local county agent or nursery
owner and ask for assistance in identification of the problem and
the recommended control.
