Preparing Your Site For Planting Zoysia Grass
| Preparation
- Zoysia seed are very small and a well-prepared seedbed needs to be debris free and
completely smooth and packed for the best results.
Zoysia does the best in a soil with the
pH of 6.0-6.5 and getting the soil tested would be the first step.
Remember that once zoysia is established it will choke the weeds out, zoysia
must have a chance to get established first.

Using Lime And Fertilizer To Prep Soil For Zoysia Planting
If there is no soil testing available
use 50 lb. of dolomite limestone per 1000 sq. ft., when you know that you live in an area
that usually needs lime. Add 15 lbs. per 1000 sq. ft. of a complete fertilizer like 8-8-8
or 10-10-10 depending upon the fertility of the soil. A good balanced fertilizer is needed
even with the best of soils to promote better root and seedling development.
Seeding Zoysia For Successful Germination
When to seed Zoysia Grass Seed Warm soil (65-70 degrees F) is necessary for
satisfactory germination, but it is important that seeding be done early enough in the
year to get the seedlings well enough established to survive the first winter. The optimum
seeding time in the mid-South is late Spring. June is good in any adapted area and July 4
should be the latest seeding date north of the Mason-Dixon Line. Early August is the very
latest in the upper South. Early spring plantings are best in
all areas based on the soil temperature.
SEED BED PREPARATION FOR ZOYSIA GRASS
Apply Roundup if needed to kill weeds
or old lawn grass. This will reduce competition and shade
problems which is a big factor in the growth and germination from
seed. Soil test and lime accordingly, to reach a pH of 6.0 to 6.5. If you know
the soil needs lime (You live in an alkaline soil area) and testing is not available use
50-lb. dolomite per 1,000 Sq. Ft. Till the soil incorporating the lime and 15 lb. Per
1000Sq. Ft. of 10-10-10 or 8-8-8 fertilizer until well mixed and finely broken. Level the
lawn surface area, removing all debris. Slope your soil away from the house and other
buildings to provide correct drainage.
