Zoysia Variety Details And Descriptions
Zenith zoysia (sold by SEEDLAND) is one of the few seeded
varieties that is easily planted and grown on a well-prepared seedbed.
Zenith zoysia makes a beautiful, dense, warm season turf.
Once fully established this variety can perform well in high traffic
areas. Zenith germinates in 14-24 days in soil temperatures of at least 70
degrees with Irrigation. Sow up until 90 before frost above the North Carolina border and up 60 days before frost
in the rest of the frost zones of the south. Best results are
achieved by planting in early spring when soil temps reach 65
degrees or higher.

Compadre Zoysia (also sold by Seedland) is an early green-up, dark green
variety that can be planted from seed. Compadre was formerly known as companion
zoysia but the name had to be changed due to a copyright issue. Compadre zoysia is specially formulated for a faster
germination and has low fertilizer and water requirements.
Empire Zoysia
has tight blade
growth also contributes to the depth of color found in
Empire
Zoysia. With its wide blades and luscious dark green hue
that lasts through much of the winter, it's truly a turf grass
that will make your neighbors jealous. You'll also enjoy greatly
enhanced curb appeal for your home. It is one of the few grasses
rated to perform well in all zones. As hardy as it is
attractive, Empire has a deep, thick root structure and is more
drought tolerant than most varieties of Zoysia once established.
In addition, slow growth plus natural cinch bug and chemical
resistance mean your lawn will require less maintenance, mowing
and watering than with other types of warm season grass.
Emerald is a varietal hybrid of japonica and
tenuifolia and can only be grown with propagation methods by sprigging or plugs.
Emerald zoysia has a deep green color as the name implies and was developed to be faster
growing and is used mostly on golf courses in the south.
El Toro was developed in the state of California and is a
variety developed from the species japonica. This variety is the best shade tolerant of the zoysias plus has
good drought resistance.
El Toro is grown by vegetative propagation.
Meyer (Amazoy) also called Z52 was introduced as the best grass variety in
America and was highly written about in articles as the new breed of
zoysia. Meyer
has beautiful color, density and fair cold tolerance allowing the areas
of adaptation to
extend farther North than other warm season grasses can grow. Propagated methods are
sod, plugs, and sprigs. Meyer seeds are only occasionally
available.
Other varieties such as Cashmere, Zorro, etc. may be
sold by local sod company suppliers - Seedland does not
currently sell these varieties as plugs or sod. NOTE that
Seedland only sells plugs (no sod) - For sod check in yellow
pages under "sodding" or "landscaping".

NOTICE: Please note that we ONLY
recommend Zoysia seeds for use in bare soil areas.
Planting seeds into existing grasses has a HIGH
FAILURE rate. If planting into an existing
lawn (grass and/or weeds) we recommend that you consider
using Zoysia plugs
instead of seeds. |
Below: Zenith Zoysia planted on a golf
course:

Two important requirements for seeding
Zenith & Compadre Zoysia. (1) Plant at
higher seed rates for best results (recommended rates are 1-2 lbs. per 1000 sq.ft.)
(2) Water daily or even multiple times daily for first 30 days of establishment
(starting from when you plant). Then water every other day for
next 4-6 weeks. If you can't water (irrigate) don't plant Zoysia.
Zoysia is a slow grower when
plugged or sprigged and WILL take about two years to achieve a fully covered and
established lawn. Seeding with Zenith Zoysia seeds, and following the instructions given for a
new establishment, under good conditions you can expect much sooner coverage
of your lawn with a fairly established during the first growing
season, and complete coverage your second year.
Read more about the NEW
Compadre
Zoysia. Both Compadre and Zenith are selections from the same breeding line.
Compadre has been observed to green up a couple of weeks earlier than Zenith.
Other than that, they are VERY similar. Compadre used to be a coated seed but is
now available only as non-coated (raw) seeds.
